Commonwealth Games baton begins its journey to India

The Queen's Baton Relay has begun its journey from Buckingham Palace to India for the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games. The relay has preceded every Games since 1958, and Lord Sebastian Coe, former Indian cricket captain Kapil Dev, and double Olympic gold medalist Dame Kelly Holmes carried the torch in its early stages. The baton will travel through all the Commonwealth nations, covering a distance of more than 170,000 kilometres in 236 days, before a 100-day national tour of India. Commonwealth Games England president Kelly Holmes said: "Excitement is now building towards the Games in Delhi next year. "The baton's journey symbolises the unity and shared ideals of the Commonwealth nations."
