In China, preparations for the olympics are well under way, with less than a month to go until the opening ceremony.Among those getting ready, are China's People's Liberation Army who will be responsible for security during the games.The country's instituted a raft of measures including a 100,000 strong anti- terrorism force and surface to air missiles have been deployed around the major venues.Land forces based in Beijing and three neighbouring military area commands, including Shenyang, Jinan and Nanjing, would also help to secure the games.An army official said China has charged an elite SWAT team, the Snow Wolf Commando Unit, with ensuring security for the Beijing Games, while air, land, and sea units of the People's Liberation Army had been positioned in and around the city.Special forces such as chemical warfare specialists and an engineering force would also join the massive security operation which will involve combat aircraft, warships and missiles.A no-fly zone would be imposed over Beijing for the Olympic Games in line with procedures followed in previous host cities.Troops will also cooperate with public security departments to exercise strict ground control and ban flights by any small aircraft.The Chinese military has conducted daily drills aimed at ensuring that guns and explosives are prevented from reaching important targets, explosives can be detected and disarmed and victims are properly evacuated in the event of an emergency.
