[Channel 4 News] Violence returns to Somalia 2008.04.21

By Nick Paton Walsh: Dozens are reported dead in renewed fighting between Islamist rebels and government forces in Mogadishu. Weeks of relative calm in Mogadishu have been shattered by what has been called the worst bombardment of civilians for decades. Streets echoed to the sound of mortar fire as Islamist-led rebel fighters in Somalia seized two more towns from government forces. At least 85 people have been killed so far in battles between the insurgents and allied Ethiopian and Somali troops. It followed a weekend of heavy fighting which rocked the capital, Mogadishu. After clashes in one Islamist stronghold, a witness said she had seen dead bodies lying outside a mosque.
