Brown and Cameron clash over a spending review

Tory leader David Cameron taunted the Prime Minister at Commons questions by brandishing a Treasury document entitled "Reduction in medium term spending". In a rowdy exchange, he called on Gordon Brown to end the "deceit" over public spending cuts. Mr Brown sparked Tory jeers and laughter when he denied total spending would be cut after 2011, saying total spending would continue to rise and it would be a "zero per cent rise in 2013-14". Amid loud laughter from the Tories, Mr Cameron remarked: "I think that answer gets zero per cent. You said clearly: no, it will rise. "So can you explain a Treasury presentation given to us and on page seven it says clearly with headings for current spending and capital spending, the headline is: 'Reduction in medium term spending'. "If even the Treasury is going round giving presentations around the country saying that public spending as a total is being cut, why can't you admit to the truth." Mr Brown said: "I've told you previously that current spending is going to rise and that capital spending will fall after 2011. These are the public spending projections for the future."
