Brothers killed in house fire

Two children have been found dead following a house fire, police said. The brothers, aged five and seven, were found by firefighters as they tackled a blaze at a property in Eastbourne, East Sussex, just after 3pm on Saturday. The children's mother was taken to the Eastbourne District General Hospital where she was treated for minor injuries. A spokesman for Sussex Police said the cause of the fire was as yet unknown. He added that a full forensic examination of the scene is currently taking place alongside fire investigators. A spokeswoman for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said it alerted police to the blaze at 3.07pm. She said the kitchen, hallway and stairs of the semi-detached property were affected by the fire. The boys' mother was named locally as Denise Goldsmith and the boys as Taylor and Lewis. Caryl Williams who lives opposite the house said she saw smoke billowing from the property as crowds gathered. Ms Williams said: "I looked out of the window and saw smoke just as the fire engines were coming round the corner. "I saw a firefighter bring someone out, but I thought it was an adult - I didn't know it was those poor little boys. "I didn't know them but I'd seen them playing. They were lovely little boys, they'd just been bought a new trampoline and they looked like they were having so much fun." The house remained cordoned off although neighbours who had been evacuated during the fire were allowed to return to their homes. Neighbours laid flowers in front of the property, which had blackened walls and boarded up windows. A message inside one of the bouquets read: "To Lewis and Little Mr T, our thoughts are with you little guys. "We'll miss your playful shouts and the sight of you on your bikes or wrestling in the grass."
