BRITS 2009 - Duffy crowned queen of the Brits

Welsh soul star Duffy has cleaned up at the Brits while critics snubbed Coldplay. The 24-year-old won in the British Female Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act categories and her debut long-player Rockferry won Best Album. Rockferry was the best-selling album of 2008 and shifted 4.5 million copies around the world. But Coldplay, who like Duffy were nominated in four categories, walked away empty-handed at the awards, most of which are decided by music industry insiders. The band scooped three Grammys last month and their latest album Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends topped the global sales chart last year with 6.6 million copies. The ceremony at London's Earls Court was hosted by Kylie Minogue and Gavin and Stacey stars James Corden and Mathew Horne. Girls Aloud, U2, Kings of Leon, Estelle, the Ting Tings and Duffy were among the stars who performed on the night. The Pet Shop Boys closed the show after taking the Outstanding Contribution to Music award. The duo performed a medley of their classic 80s hits alongside Brandon Flowers, lead singer of the Killers, and Lady GaGa, who recently topped the charts with Just Dance. Indie outfit Elbow, whose album The Seldom Seen Kid won the Mercury Prize last year, took the Brit for Best Group. Former Style Council and Jam frontman Paul Weller took the award for Best British Male while veteran rockers Iron Maiden took the Best Live Act award. In the international categories, the Kings of Leon won Best Album and Best Group while rapper Kanye West took Best Male. Katy Perry was named Best International Female.
