Welsh soul star Duffy has kicked off the Brits by winning the British Female Solo Artist award. And the 24-year-old did not have to wait long before adding a second gong, for British Breakthrough Act. Irish band U2 opened the show at London's Earls Court with new single Get On Your Boots, which is released this week. Kylie Minogue, wearing a flowing white dress, performed a comedy dance routine to her hit Can't Get You Out of My Head with co-hosts, Gavin and Stacey stars James Corden and Mathew Horne, who wore tight-fitting red dresses. Performances from a scantily-clad Girls Aloud and Coldplay - who were neck-and-neck with Duffy going into the show with four nominations apiece - followed. The Pet Shop Boys were due to be presented with the outstanding contribution to music award, while Florence & The Machine were named critics' choice. Nationwide Mercury Prize winners Elbow had three Brits nominations - best group, best album and best live act. The best British single is decided by a live telephone vote. The Brits Academy, made up of 1,000 invited music industry insiders and critics, decide on the remaining eight awards.
