The film version of international best-selling novel Brick Lane has had its premiere at the London Film Festival. The vibrant East End area is famed for its Asian restaurants, market stalls and leather merchants. It is also the basis of Monica Ali's prize-winning book, which tells the story of Bangladeshi-born Nazneen, who moves to London at the age of 17 for an arranged marriage. The book tells of her experiences living with an older man and how she copes with her identity and self sacrifice. Some members of Brick Lane's Bengali community protested against the filming of the movie, over worries about how the neighbourhood would be portrayed. But director Sarah Gavron was unfazed. She said: "Brick Lane is very much a woman's story so I emotionally connect with material when I direct it and I felt enormously connect to this story because it's the story of Nazneen trying to find her place in the world."© Independent Television News Limited 2007.
