Blur take to the stage at NME Awards, Oasis are a no-show

Oasis have walked away with the Best Band gong at the Shockwaves NME awards. The Manchester band, who were not at the ceremony to accept the accolades, led the award battle with seven nominations - but Noel Gallagher was no match for US president Barack Obama who was named the Hero of the Year. Still, he managed to take the gong for Best Band Blog. NME editor Conor McNicholas said of the London event: "Oasis have proved yet again... that our love affair with them simply has no sign of ending." Meanwhile, Muse took a hat-trick of awards, picking up the prizes for Best Live Band, Best Album Art Work for Haart and Sexiest Male for singer Matt Bellamy. Elbow, who clinched the Nationwide Mercury Prize last year, won the Outstanding Contribution to British Music and The Cure took the Godlike Genius Award. But the toast of the night was the historic reunion of Blur, who took to the stage for a surprise performance of This Is A Low from their acclaimed album Parklife. Other NME winners included Dizzee Rascal, The Killers, MGMT while President Obama's predecessor George W Bush had the honour of being named by NME readers Villain Of The Year for a sixth time. Arctic Monkeys won the Best DVD award, while front man Alex Turner also took Best Video with his side project The Last Shadow Puppet. Turner's girlfriend Alexa Chung walked off with the Best Dress award and lead singer of indie band Paramore, Hayley Williams, was named Sexiest Female. Amy Winehouse was named Worst Dressed and Pete Doherty picked up the award for Best New Band. The Mighty Boosh won the Best TV award, beating Skins, Gavin and Stacey, Never Mind The Buzzcocks and the IT Crowd.
