Banning misleading labels in Europe

Food labels in Europe can no longer lure consumers with claims such as '99% fat free' or 'Lose 5 kg in one week'. Under a new European Regulation on nutrition and health claims, which came into force on 1 July 2007, consumers must be given reliable information, and only scientifically substantiated claims may be used. This report illustrates the situation today, now that the new legislation is being applied.
