Bali - United Nations Conference on Climate Change

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is taking place from 3 to 14 December 2007 in Bali, Indonesia. The Conference brings together representatives of over 180 countries. With the first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol expiring at the end of 2012, the Bali conference is a crucial and timely opportunity to launch negotiations on the more ambitious global action against climate change that needs to be taken in the post-2012 era. The urgency of determined action is now even greater in view of the alarming scientific evidence of climate change highlighted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change – joint winner of this year's Nobel Peace Prize with former US Vice-President Al Gore - in its latest scientific assessment report "Climate Change 2007." For the European Commission and European Union Member States, it is essential that consensus be reached in Bali to start formal negotiations on a comprehensive global climate change agreement governing the period after 2012.
