Calgary Zoo announced the loss of a baby elephant named Malti. Below are excerpts from their press release. For more pictures got to: http://www.calgaryzoo.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=42&Itemid=52&animalID=158 It is with great sadness that Calgary Zoo officials advise that this afternoon Malti and her caregivers lost the battle against the devastating elephant herpesvirus that had afflicted the young elephant in the past few days. Several of her keepers were with her at the time of her death. Born on August 9, 2007, Malti brought joy and delight to thousands of zoo visitors over her short life and helped to raise awareness of the endangered status of her species. Her keepers, staff and volunteers at the zoo are stunned by her death; the grief they feel is tangible.
