The first avian influenza case was declared in a duck breeding farm situated in Dindang, in the region of Guangxi Zhuang (southwest of China) in January 2004. Dindang is 100 km northwest of the region's main city Nanning and 150 km from the China-Vietnam border. The authorities have taken destruction measures of fowl within a radius of 3 km of the infected farm, as well as prevention and decontamination measures in the areas situated close to the core of the infection.
