AVANT-GARDE HIP-HOP SHORT FILM

AVANT-GARDE HIP-HOP SHORT FILM

This is an avant-garde film that I did earlier this year. This is my first film out of many to come on different topics. Being that I consider myself a part of the Hip-Hop generation, I decided to an experimental film on a topic that I know. Please do not view this film as a music video because it is far from that. It is a short film, shot in 16mm, and made to look like a fictional music video as a parody of the current state of Hip-Hop. The song is a real track, titled "Beast" and was donated by a friend that is an underground MC. This film was not created to offend anyone; but, should be taken merely as a free expression of my thoughts and views on the current state of Hip-Hop as displayed through the media. All directing, cinematography was done by me; but, I did receive some help on the edit as far as the special effects were concerned. Throughout the film you will see that I use certain symbols to express my views. A basic break-down is as follows: Over saturated colors-represent the over saturation of the commercial side rather than the art behind the music Darkness of the film (low key lighting)-shows a dark and grim future for Hip-Hop if the media and corporations continue to dictate its essence. Also can be seen as teh death of the art that used to be behind the music. The Color Red-represents a socialist thought and ideology. Super-imposed upon the black background shows the isolation of these views and lack of presence as was once found in Hip-Hop music. The Color Gold-represents the allure of money and greed that consumes the mentality of young MCs looking to pursue a career in making Hip-Hop music. Booty Dancing Girl-represents the objectification of women and that most of the music coming out is dance music Lap Dance-represents the popularity of the strip club and "stripper songs" that are so popular in the music of today Grey Goose-represents the ad placement and commercialism pervasive in today's Hip-Hop videos Fake Diddy-represents the flamboyant nature of today's Hip-Hop where even the people behind the scenes are star-searching and "need to be seen" J-Star Entertainment-a fictional record company. Kidd Video-a fictional DJ and music video director (Hype Williams/DJ Drama cross parody). He or she represents the underground connection that exists between the streets and the commercial side of Hip-Hop ***Please note that there is no Kidd Video mix tape to be released*** Enjoy! J
