The population of Armenia is estimated to be 3,200,000 people. The first Republic of Armenia, with the capital Yerevan, was established on 28/05/1918. In 1920, the Soviet system was established in the same year and Armenia became the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic with Yerevan as the capital. A referendum on secession was held on 21/09/1991. The Supreme Soviet of Armenia approved the results of the referendum and declared the independence of the Republic of Armenia on 23/09/1991. The fundamental document determining the government of Armenia is the Constitution adopted by the referendum on 02/07/1995. The Constitution declared the Republic of Armenia as a sovereign democratic social legal state where the power resides with the people and is exercised by free elections, referendums as well as government institutions, local government bodies and officials.
