Swede Lars Lewen and Ophelie David of France took the men's and women's titles in the second and final stop of the Saab Salomon Crossmax international series in Grand Valira, Andorra on Thursday (March 15). This year's event featured the biggest names in men and women's skiercross and the intensity and speed of the Saab/Salomon Crossmax International Series was a definite crowd pleaser. The season has been disruptive for the skiers, due to the lack of snow, but the weather was pretty good in Andorra and produced some great racing. The men's heats began with a total of 30 racers essentially from France, Spain, Switzerland and Italy. An exciting final ended in victory for Lewen. The Swede was closely followed across the finish line by Switzerland's Michael Schmid. Swiss Andreas Steffen, also a big name in mountain biking, finished third. Frenchman Enak Gavaggio, a specialist at this discipline was fourth. Four French girls qualified for the women's final with David, who recently won the freestyle world cup, dominating from start to finish. Marion Josserand finished second ahead of Meryll Boulangeat who was runner-up to David in the world cup. Cloe Georges was fourth. Skiercross received a huge boost this year when it was awarded Olympic status. So there is now an extra incentive for all the riders to perform well as they look forward to competing in the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games.
