On August 24, 79 C.E. the world came to a catastrophic end for those people living in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. A day that began like any other in the thriving towns of Herculaneum and Pompeii would end in a dark and fiery disaster. The very mountain that afforded for its inhabitants a rich and lush lifestyle filled with fine food and leisure produced a grisly and untimely death. Today, carefully uncovered from the molten rock and ashes, Pompeii and Herculaneum are two of the most extensive and well-preserved archaeological sites in the world. Modern visitors to these sites step into a time machine to the First Century. What do these remains reveal about the people who lived and died here? How many escaped the wrath of Vesuvius; how many did not? POMPEII: BURIED ALIVE resuscitates the men, women, and children; the wealthy and the slaves of Pompeii and Herculaneum. We will follow in the footsteps of Pompeii's archaeological director, Baldassarre Conticello, as he and his team continue their quest to unearth the treasures of Pompeii. We will pay a visit to the National Archaeological Museum of Naples where hundreds of artifacts from Pompeii and Herculaneum now have a home. And we will explore the world-renowned J. Paul Getty Museum in Malibu, California, which is patterned after Herculaneum's Villa of Papyri.
