An award in the Dales

Emmerdale has at last beaten its rivals to scoop the best soap gong at the Royal Television Society Awards. The soap beat off stiff competition from EastEnders and Coronation Street to take home the award. Emmerdale was described as 'a superb combination of well-paced drama and comedy.' Comedian Catherine Tate, famous for her 'Am I Bovverd' catchphrase was also a hit and took home two awards including best entertainment show, beating the likes of I'm A Celebrity and The X Factor. Shameless actor David Threlfall, who plays Frank Gallagher won best actor and legendary screenwriter Andrew Davis was named best drama writer for his adaptation of Charles Dickens's Bleak House. One surprise of the night was the fact that Geordie duo Ant and Dec walked away empty handed, they lost out on best entertainment performance to Paul O'Grady, whose was honoured with the following... 'He has put his own show and the Daytime schedules on the entertainment map, and in doing so sparked one of the great talent battles of the year.'
