The new U.S. House of Representatives speaker Nancy Pelosi met Afghan president Hamid Karzai on Sunday (January 28). Pelosi and her Congressional delegation flew in from Pakistan stopping by the U.S. base in Bagram where she had breakfast with U.S. soldiers stationed north of Kabul. The visit takes place a day after a Taliban official warned of more suicide attacks in the coming months. A senior commander on Saturday (January 27) told Reuters that the group is gearing up for a massive summer offensive, with more than 2,000 suicide bombers ready for action and even more preparing. Earlier in the week a top U.S. diplomat warned Afghanistan was in for a bloody and dangerous spring after the bloodiest year since the hardline Islamist Taliban was ousted by U.S.-led forces in 2001.
