A suicide car bomber attacked a civilian contractor's vehicle on the outskirts of the Afghan capital, Kabul, wounding three people, on Friday, (January 12) police said. "A suicide car bomber blew himself up in the Safid Sang area killing himself and wounding three others including a foreigner," said Alishah Paktiawal, head of the local police department. Last year was the bloodiest in Afghanistan since U.S.-led forces overthrew the Taliban in 2001 and the violence included about 120 suicide bombings. There was a reduction in violence at the end of the year but Afghanistan's NATO peacekeepers said they killed up to 150 insurgents infiltrating from Pakistan this week. Afghanistan says suicide bombers and other insurgents are coming from Pakistan. Pakistan denies helping the Taliban but U.S. intelligence Chief John Negroponte said on Thursday (January 11) it would be necessary to eliminate Taliban safe havens in Pakistan's tribal areas to end the insurgency in Afghanistan.
