With oil prices continuing to rise, the average tank of gas can cost over $60 to fill. According to a survey by AAA and the Oil Price Information Service, the national average price of a gallon of regular gas, $3.51, has hit record highs. And with no sign of relief ahead, drivers are looking for ways to cut down on fuel costs. Experts say there are ways to make a trip to the pump a little less painful. Maintaining proper tire pressure is critical and can save up to two percent of your fuel economy. When air pressure becomes low, the engine has to work harder and uses more fuel then necessary. Speed can also be a factor. Every five miles per hour over 60 is equal to paying an additional 20 cents a gallon. In addition, experts agree that keeping your car properly maintained and following the owner’s manual recommendations is one of the best things you can do.
