Sci-fi writer celebrates 90th birthday

Prolific science fiction author Arthur C Clarke has celebrated his 90th birthday.The British writer, originally from Minehead, Somerset, spent his landmark birthday in his adopted home of Colombo, Sri Lanka.He celebrated the day with close friends and during the festivities a retired Russian cosmonaut presented Sir Arthur with a special medal.On his birthday, the legendary writer has three wishes; for ET to call, for man to kick his oil habit and for peace in his new home country of Sri Lanka.He added that he would like to be remembered first and foremost as a writer and predicts commercial space travel will one day be the norm.Sir Arthur has written more than 100 science-fiction books, including The Sentinel, the cult short-story upon which the the epic film 2001: A Space Odyssey was based.© Independent Television News Limited 2007.
