Law returns to Afghanistan on peace mission

Jude Law has returned to Afghanistan for the second year running to promote support of Peace Day - a one-day worldwide ceasefire. In 2007 Law went to Afghanistan to film the documentary The Day After Peace, charting the ten-year journey made by film maker and founder of Peace One Day, Jeremy Gilley. He said: "When I left Kabul last year I was hugely moved not by the conflict that I'd read so much about but by the people's courage and the people's sense of hope. Law added: "Our message is the same as it's always been. We want people to stop fighting, of course, we don't want innocent people, children, women to suffer unnecessarily and unfairly." Mr Gilley said: "Through the support of the United Nations, particularly Unicef at that time the opportunity came to come to Afghanistan." His documentary also features Hollywood celebrity and human rights activist Angelina Jolie. It debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in May. He added: "When you see the film, the efforts of Unicef and those partners, was extraordinary with 1.4 million children vaccinated from polio in this country last year." Violence in Afghanistan has surged with more than 2,500 people, including 1,000 civilians, killed in the conflict in the first six months of this year, according to aid agencies.
