Eurovision countdown begins

Eurovision countdown begins

Daz Sampson is warming up his vocal chords in preparation for this year's Eurovision Song Contest. The UK has had a disappointing few years in the contest, but the former DJ reckons he can turn our luck around and bring home the title of Eurovision winner. The contest, which must be one of the cheesiest and bizarre shows in history, manages to grab an estimated 100 million viewers. This year, artists from 24 different countries will battle it out in Athens. Daz himself may be looking for glory, but the track he is singing, Teenage Life, hasn't gone down too well in the UK music charts. It is currently at number 13. But, there isn't any chance of embarrassment for Daz as duo Jemini clocked up the dreaded 'nil points' in 2004 for their song Cry Baby. Originally called The Eurovision Grand Prix it was created in 1955 with seven countries taking part. In earlier years, the winners became international stars, including Cliff Richard, Celine Dion and Abba. Ireland has won the contest seven times, including Johnny Logan coming in top twice. The UK has won five times and came second 15 times.
