



Nicky Messiah, a 17-year black long distance runner, tells her white boyfriend, Mark Harty, that she is pregnant and that they must break up because of the racial tensions at their school Burgard High. Fuller, upset with the situation at Burgard, sends Hoffs and Hanson undercover and Hanson befriends black athlete Patrick Riley. Riley having seen Nicky, whom he really likes, with Mark, pulls the school's fire alarm and when the students assemble outside the school, a race riot ensues. The next day Nicky's father George and Burgard's principal, delivers a racial harmony speech to thestudent body. At the state finals track meet at Burgard, Nicky tries to tell her father that she ispregnant, but her words fall on deaf ears. As Riley, competing against Harty in the mens' 400 meter,is hit with a ball-bearing and loses the race, a confused Nicky jumps off a nearby bridge.Because of the sabotage at the track meet, the police prepare for a race not at Burgard. Nicky,however, exposes her condition, quells the riot, and makes her father proud.
