2007 EU Enlargement Strategy and Progress Reports - Chapter 01 (15:17)

In the annual progress reports, to be released on 06/11/2007, the Commission monitors and assesses the achievements of each of the candidate and potential candidate countries over the past twelve months. The countries engaged in the present enlargement agenda are: Croatia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Turkey, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia and Kosovo under UN Security Council Resolution 1244. EU financial assistance, focused on the major challenges facing the countries, is supporting their reform efforts on their path towards the EU. On 06/11/2007, the Commission will also adopt its enlargement strategy document, explaining why the enlargement policy has been beneficial to the Union in the past and why it is in the interest of both the Union and the countries concerned to continue with a gradual and well managed enlargement. To illustrate this, the European Commission's audiovisual unit is distributing a video stockshot containing general views from all candidate and potential candidate countries, as well as some case sutides of pre-accession funding e.g. in the areas of: - vocational training; - restoration of the cultural heritage; - support to SMEs; - projects in favour of maritime safety and - environment protection
