10 Years of Economic and Monetary Union
10 years ago, in May 1998, a landmark decision was made: eleven Member States had fulfilled the conditions to participate to the third and final stage of EMU. The following month, the European Central Bank was created. And 6 months later, on 01/01/1999, the euro became the currency in these countries. To celebrate ten years of existence of the EMU, the European Commission will adopt on 07/05/2008 a communication to the Council and the European Parliament, in which it will list the successes of the euro, and also make proposals to improve the functioning of the EMU, not losing sight of the urgent challenges posed by globalization, the aging of population and global warming. In this context, the Audiovisual Service is producing an infoclip which will include footage of: - Brussels Stock Exchange, Belgium; - Value of the euro against the dollar; - Erasmus students paying consumption in euros, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium; - Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry, France - French tourists paying in euros; - French tourist paying with a Maestro card; - European Central Bank, Frankfurt, Germany; - People walking at the Belgian coast.
